united-nations: Dr. Martin Luther King was a visionary civil rights leader and recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. In this photo from 1964, Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, are greeted by Ralph J. Bunche, United Nations Under-Secretary for Special Political Affairs (and himself a Nobel Peace Prize winner), at UN Headquarters in New York. Dr. King’s legacy continues in many ways, including in the Sustainable Development Goals, where reduced inequalities and peace and justice are key to our vision for a better world. All of us can stand up against racial prejudice and intolerant attitudes. Be…

Happy Christmas! I was thinking about skipping this week’s Sunday Smack altogether, because I though no-one would read it on Christmas Eve. But then I saw the flood of issues and posts from the course of this week, which made me decide I can’t take the week off. So, here’s a couple of not at all christmassy reads for you today. UN Vote on Jerusalem Tests the Power of Trump’s Threats and Ultimatums Hopefully he will think twice before such a dumb move. The Well Respected UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is Leaving Because His Job Has Become Impossible…

Happy Sunday! I hope all is well with you all. I am still not in a chatty mode, but I have several posts and even a big change planned on this site. Until then, I hope you’ll enjoy this weekend’s reading. Saudi Power Play Sends Shockwaves Abroad More than one week on, it is still not clear where this all leads. A Coup in Zimbabwe? Happy weekend, everybody and happy long weekend to all to whom that applies! I hope your weekend is happy and relaxed! This week’s round-up is short, but there are some important topics here to check out. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is Just Doing His Job It’s a wonder how President Trump havent’t tweeted lies about the High Commissioner yet, that’s what he seems to do with everybody who dares to criticize him. Rules for Reconstruction in Syria I don’t know whether or not it is timely to speak about reconstruction in Syria yet, but this is a…

Happy Sunday, everybody! I hope you are all safe and well! When I complained about being short of news, I didn’t exactly wish for anything close to this. One of my politics professors used to say that the greatest guarantee we have against a third world war is the nuclear bomb itself. Because all parties are very well aware that once it’s out, all hells will break loose. I do hope he was right. Also, I will repeat that any policy that encourages people to hate others for what they are or where they are coming from is wrong. And…

This is why I went to Budapest Pride this year

So, I attended the Budapest Pride March this Saturday. This was my first Pride experience ever, although many people I respect take part each year, it just never occured to me before that I should be there too.  I am just not the marcher or demonstrator type in general, but then there were many issues lately that converted many non-marchers, I guess. I know quite a few gay people, some I even call friends, so tolerance and acceptance had never been a question for me. Not even before I left my small hometown, where homosexuality is still a taboo, something…

Happy Sunday, all! I just love this time of the year around the summer solstice, when the days are the longest. I could spend all night outside reading and taking advantage of even the very last and faintest rays of daylight. I wish I could take the summer and do just that. Read books, sleep and enjoy the sun. But then there are stuff to attend to… Amidst an all American political circus show, many seem to be competing on the who gets blocked by Trump sooner on Twitter race. If only it could really lead to “Trumplessness”, I swear…

Happy Sunday and Happy Summer! This week Britain managed to pull off yet another election where practically everybody lost an no-one knows what to come after, this seems to have become the new standard over there.  Also, political turmoil is mounting in the US, but the President still doesn’t seem to be worried. On this week’s episode of The West Wing Weekly (S03E09 Bartlet for America) there were a lot of talk about Congressional hearings and what they are all about. I happened to listen to it the morning after #ComeyDay, and again, I just love when entertainment really adds…
