UN Pulse from U.N. Dag Hammarskjöld Library: United Nations Day, 24 October
24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948, marking the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, the United Nations officially came into being.
The United Nations now has 193 member states, and continues to work toward its goals of keeping peace throughout the world; developing friendly relations among nations; helping nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each others’ rights and freedoms; and acting as a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.
