Blabbing January 2022

Anyone else feels like January went by in a hurry? I barely got used to writing 2022 and now we are more than a month into the year. I started the year really exhausted after the end of year rush in my workplace, and I was determined to go on vacation for at least a few days. I was even contemplating a foreign trip for early February (just around now), which I haven’t had in a very long time, but that’s not going to happen now either (due to Covid and other reasons). Now I can’t have any days off…

I consume content (therefore I am)

As you would imagine, my opinions are formed by the things I read and watch, and by the people I am around. Not just in person, in my life, but online, the people I follow. Out of everything I consume, reading has the most important place in my life. I’ve been an avid reader since childhood and the touch and smell of a book is still one of my favourite things. Let alone reading in silence with nothing else to do! A rare occurence… My reading time decreased since I started working in my current job, where I spend most…

Sunday Smack

Happy Sunday, people, I hope everybody is having a great weekend! It is unbelievably gloomy here in Hungary these days, I am so in need of a dose of sunshine now. Perhaps a doze of my favorite TV shows will do until then. This is going to happen tonight, and I can’t wait. I mean I literally have zero time to watch these things anymore, but this one is a must. Even without my idol, Madeleine Albright in it, but with her, even more so! Anyway, Part II. of my UNGA general debate recap is halfway done, I plan to…

Sunday Smack

Welcome to the 100th Sunday Smack everybody!!! I can’t believe that I am doing this weekly round-up for 100 weeks (= almost two years!) already! The blog itself will turn 4 this summer too!! On this occasion besides thanking you all for reading and sticking with me all through these years I thought it would be best to share my thoughts about this blog with you all. Quite some time ago I decided to do this just to follow the topics I am most interested in. I sure want to continue doing it, and want to do it with more…

Happy Sunday, Happy Women’s Day People! I hope you all had a nice day today. I had an extremely busy week at work and thought there would be a lot of posts to catch up on, but hardly found any. Perhaps my favorite bloggers were busy as well.  So, here’s a short version of Sunday Smack, the one before the big one next week!  The Case of Russia’s Detention of Ukrainian Military Pilot Savchenko under IHL Great post taking all the scenarios into account. The Court will have to decide first whether there is an international armed conflict between Russia…

Monthly Matters

Doing: Being outdoors really. I work in an air conditioned office building where it is hard to even notice the changing of seasons. So usually I can’t wait to get out, breath some fresh air, and have some fun! I had some of it this August (not nearly enough, though), in the form of late night walks, short trip on the country-side while at home in Nagykálló, even a Danube cruise-trip. Learning: I have already written about Learning How To Learn, I took the 4-week course throughout August and it was so much fun. Highly recommended! Besides that, I was…

Sunday Smack

This week was so eventful world affairs news-wise that it was almost hard to pick but a few of my favorite blog posts. I tried my best though. On world affairs: A Rare Bit of Good News from Syria Shows What’s Possible When the International Community is United January 22 will be the next occasion for the Syrian government to prove how cooperative it is. CAR President: I’m Not Resigning! UPDATE: He Resigned! Whether this will bring any positive changes for the CAR is unclear. Hopefully it will. Iraq: on the brink of implosion? Ever worrysome news coming from Iraq, while…

Undoubtedly, the world affairs event of the week is the launch of the 68th session of the UN General Assembly. I am planning a detailed post after the end of the General Debate, so now I only feature some great blog posts below, as usual. This next week is going to be very eventful for me as well. On Wednesday I am going to London for a really short profession related trip. I am looking forward to it. It brings a most welcome refreshment in my professional life right now as I am quite unhappy at my current job, mostly…

NBC Picks Up a ‘West Wing’-Style Show Set at the United Nations

NBC Picks Up a ‘West Wing’-Style Show Set at the United Nations “ It might be hopeless to send in Annan to broker a deal between a dictator who has no intention of ceasing his campaign against dissident forces and democracy-protestors-turned-rebels. But it doesn’t mean Annan and the UN were wrong to try, and the backstory of how he prepped for those negotiations, how they went down, and what it was like to watch the proposal that would have stood down the conflict fall apart, would make for a fascinating multi-part story.” I like this!
