Come mid-September and the annual high level week at the UN General Assembly, I used to be glued to the TV or some other device on hand where I could follow the speeches. Unfortunately these days I don’t have that kind of time on any random September afternoon (I’m on CET), so I couldn’t follow everything that was happening real time, but I was still very interested in the outcomes of those high level meetings. Besides the UN webservice and the still very active international community Twitter (sorry, I can’t call it anything else), I followed the happenings of the…
Back when I started blogging, I only knew I wanted to write. After a bit of experimenting I knew I had to pick a theme I was genuinely interested in. So why indeed is it world affairs I decided to be blabbing about? Right after high school I went to learn sociology. At first it was only to prepare for law school and I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to finish it all the way through, but then I became really interested in the topics we’ve learnt about. To this day, I love reading and studying behavioural sciences, mostly…
Happy Sunday! This year is getting weirder and weirder, I guess and one can only hope we will come out of it into an improved and healed world in every way. In Hungary official communication suggests we are over the pandemic (COVID-19, there is no communication about the other one, i.e. racism), theaters are opening, beaches are crowded, people are out and about like nothing happened, while there are still several new cases every day. I can’t really decide whether I am overly precautious for not wanting to mingle with people for a while or they are irresponsible for doing…
Happy Sunday everybody! I am coming at you from what feels like a whole week of rain, and I kind of drained by it by now, I really want my summer already! Things don’t look brighter in the world either, feels like I haven’t heard any good news in ages. Do you have anything? Please share with me, I need it! I didn’t post last week’s collection, so this is going to be a bit longer, than usual, I hope you don’t mind. Happy reading! Learning from US Streets / A moment of reckoning International law, specifically human rights law…
Happy Sunday! I know there is so much going on in the world, but I hope you found something to be happy about this weekend! I sincerely hope these trying times will lead to positive results too. Meanwhile we all have to take our part to signal a racist world is not the world we want to live in. Here’s another great post with resources to help gain understanding and take action. Let’s do some reading. We Can’t Breathe: UN OHCHR Experts Issue Joint Statement and Call for Reparations Statement signed by all of the independent experts of the UN…
Happy Sunday! I’ve been waiting to post about anything but the current situation, but somehow everything I read leads back to it, so now I am just going with the flow. It’s back to the office day in Hungary (for most of us anyway) tomorrow, that could really make me believe we’re out of the woods already, if I haven’t been following international news as well. To be honest, I could be believing a lot of things these days that are not true if I didn’t pay attention (so could you). But perhaps we will talk about this some other…
The United Nations offices have been present in the beautiful city of Vienna for 40 years this year and to mark the occasion they held an open house day last Sunday. I love Vienna and actually visited UNIS Vienna two times before, but this was the first open day event I’ve attended. They opened their doors from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on a Sunday and around 3000 people visited. It wasn’t a tour-like event (although you could take a tour if you wanted), but people had the chance to wander around the open parts of the building where the…
united-nations: Throwback Thursday: Nelson Mandela addresses the Special Committee Against Apartheid in the United Nations General Assembly Hall in June 1990: “We hold it as an inviolable principle that racism must be opposed by all the means that humanity has at its disposal. Wherever it occurs it has the potential to result in a systematic and comprehensive denial of human rights to those who are discriminated against.” Nelson Mandela’s journey from prisoner to President of South Africa was the triumph of an extraordinary individual against the forces of hate, ignorance and fear – and it was a testimony to the…
