Happy Sunday, Everybody! I have had the best time in London earlier this week. Although sunny London is still my favorite London, snowy London was a spectacular sight to see! And I’ll be back in just four months! Until then, there is a holiday season to get through. Every year I pledge not to become so overwhelmed and overloaded by this time, and every year I fail. It is a busy time at work and with everything else to get done, by the time it’s actually Christmas I just wish to get it over with and be able to sleep….

Happy Sunday, everybody! Only 51 weeks are left of this year now, so keep being smart with the goals you’ve set for 2017! I have had a busy work and study week, while it is incredibly cold here in Hungary. OK, perhaps nothing compared to Alaska or Canada, but pretty cold for our measures. Perfect for staying in and studying. At least the sun is shining, otherwise it would be really bleak. Here are some of the stories from this first cold week of 2017. A Tale of Two Turkeys 2016 had brought Turkey from being one of the most…

Happy Sunday! And happy Mother’s Day for all the mothers (mine especially! ♥), as we are celebrating it on the first Sunday of May on this side of the pond. Speaking of which, happy May too! That’s a whole lot of happy occasions! 🙂 And these are for your reading pleasure today: What the Failure of the Geneva Talks Means Forcing Assad to step down might be an uneasy task to say the least, but finding a worthy and capable successor proves even more difficult. Iran joins talks in Vienna about the Syrian civil war

Iran joins talks in Vienna about the Syrian civil war IT COULD have been worse. That was more or less the read-out after talks on Syria in Vienna on October 30th between allies and foes of President Bashar al-Assad including America, Saudi Arabia, Russia and, for the first time, Iran. No one walked out, even though Iran backs Mr Assad and Saudi Arabia is one of the main backers of anti-Assad rebel groups, as well as Iran’s chief rival in the region. Click the title to read more.

Happy Sunday, all!  In Hungary we are past a nice long weekend that I have spent in the countryside. I am typing these words on a train back to Budapest, that was delayed 70 (!) minutes (Edit: departure time was delayed 70 minutes, and another 60 minutes was added during the train ride, so I got home more than two hours later than planned, I’m not one to complain, but I wish I could say this is not typical in Hungary…). That means I had more than enough time to catch up with my reading for this post. Hope you’ll…

Happy Sunday, people! I have had a crazy week at work, and an even crazier (but pleasant!) weekend spent with friends, hence this late Sunday Smack. I hope you all had a great weekend too! Meanwhile, there were a lot of great readings in the blogosphere this week, it was hard to pick a few. Check out my selection. The Kunduz Hospital Attack: The Existence of a Fact-Finding Commission and  Will the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Awaken? The Kunduz Hospital Attack and the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission There need to be a way to investigate the circumstances of this attack, and this might…

Happy Sunday, people, I hope everybody is having a great weekend! It is unbelievably gloomy here in Hungary these days, I am so in need of a dose of sunshine now. Perhaps a doze of my favorite TV shows will do until then. This is going to happen tonight, and I can’t wait. I mean I literally have zero time to watch these things anymore, but this one is a must. Even without my idol, Madeleine Albright in it, but with her, even more so! Anyway, Part II. of my UNGA general debate recap is halfway done, I plan to…

Happy Sunday, everybody! I’ve spent the last four days (long weekend in Hungary) relaxing mostly, but I tried to keep up with the news as well. Here’s a few blog posts of last week’s news for you. Russia and the USA Fight. Syrians Lose. I just don’t think it works this way – like Russia calls Syria saying ‘you guys can let loose and behave badly’. Let’s hope it’s not nearly like this, especially since after quite a few grievous days in Ukraine again, the US-Russian relationship is not likely to improve.  Is Assad Now Using Chlorine to Gas His…

Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a wonderful sunshiny weekend! The past week was full of international commemorative days as you might have noticed, although I did not even mark all of them. Now, check out a bunch of other news of the week… Russia Builds Case for Military Intervention in Ukraine All signs seem to point this way.
