September 11 Anniversary: Journalists Grapple With Covering Attacks As Years Go By

September 11 Anniversary: Journalists Grapple With Covering Attacks As Years Go By Wow, I was just thinking about this. huffingtonpost: Margaret Sullivan, the new public editor of the New York Times, opened a column on the topic with a provocative thought: “The pain, the outrage, the loss – these never fade. The amount of journalism, however, must.” While Sullivan is likely to get some pushback about the line, it is indisputably true that, as time goes on, coverage of national horrors recedes. Each anniversary of Pearl Harbor, for instance, does not bring with it a great deal of journalism. This year,…

Thorbjørn Jagland: Killer Safarov is not a hero | HUMANERIGHTSEUROPE

Thorbjørn Jagland: Killer Safarov is not a hero | HUMANERIGHTSEUROPE Glorifying a convicted murderer and transforming him into a hero is unacceptable, Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland has declared. Condemning the glorification of killer Ramil Safarov, the Secretary General said: “Safarov was convicted for murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in Hungary. On August 31, he was transferred to Azerbaijan, and immediately pardoned. I find it unacceptable that a convicted murderer is welcomed as a hero. “I reject the prospect of a world whose moral code begins to fray, where respect for human dignity is denied. This is…

We’re sorry, Armenia! Or… are we?

Ironically, Hungarian foreign minister János Martonyi just said last week that the international opinion on Hungary seems to be stagnating on a not so bad position after all the turmoil around the IMF talks, controversial media legislation, constant disputes with the EU, just to name a few issues. Obviously, something needed to be done to ruin this. To put it simply: the man committed a crime, got a reasonable punishment for it, now he should be serving his sentence. But he is not. To be able to fully understand this story, we should attempt to do it on a psychological…

🙂 huffingtonpost: North Korean state television has announced that leader Kim Jong Un is married, the Associated Press reports. According to Voice of America’s Steve Herman, North Korea’s new first lady is named Ri Sol Ju. Intrigue built over several weeks as to the identity of a mystery woman who appeared next to the North Korean leader on a state television broadcast earlier this month. Rumors suggested she was either Kim’s sister or his wife. South Korean intelligence speculated the mystery woman was in fact singer Hyon Song Wol, with whom Kim allegedly had a previous relationship, only to have…

Security Council fails to adopt Syria resolution

Security Council fails to adopt Syria resolution Despite the appeals for united and concerted action to help end the escalating violence in Syria, the Security Council today failed to adopt a resolution that would have threatened sanctions on Damascus, owing to the negative votes of some of the body’s permanent members. Eleven of the Council’s 15 members voted in favour of the resolution’s text, Russia and China – both permanent members – voted against, while two others, Pakistan and South Africa, abstained.  A veto by any one of the Council’s five permanent members means a resolution cannot be adopted.

‘Number one most wanted’ Nazi-war criminal accused of complicity in 15,700 deaths tracked down in Budapest

‘Number one most wanted’ Nazi-war criminal accused of complicity in 15,700 deaths tracked down in Budapest I’ve been meaning to post about this ever since I saw how long Laszlo Csatary was trending on Twitter yesterday morning. Obviously, many people around the world have their opinions whether justice still needs to be done or not. Yes, the man is 97 years old. There are those who think that an old man in his age should be left alone, but my personal opinion is that the acts he allegedly commited were serious enough to call for justice even that many years…
