united-nations: World Press Freedom Day in 2014 focuses on three inter-related themes: the media’s importance in development; safety of journalists and the rule of law; and the sustainability and integrity of journalism. The Day this year also contributes to the shaping of the ongoing discussion around development after 2015.

World Press Freedom Index 2014 Reporters Without Borders published their latest Freedom of the Press report this week. The results are not really surprising compared to the past years. I keep being concerned about living in a country with “noticeable problems”. My media sociologist self could talk about that for hours, but now I will spare you that. I recommend to visit Reporters Without Borders to check out the whole analysis, though.

The overall findings for 2012 were bleak: Just 14 percent of the world’s population lives in societies that enjoy vibrant coverage of public affairs, a legal environment that undergirds a free press, and freedom from intrusion by the government or other political forces.

PRESS FREEDOM INDEX 2011-2012 Look up your country on World Press Freedom Day! Apparently, my country, Hungary, which is labeled as “Partly free” by Freedom House, is ranked 40th. And to my surprise, that is better than the US’s rank (only 47th), but the US is labeled as “Free” by Freedom House! Can somebody explain this to me?* *So, as it turns out, Freedom House mainly focuses on political freedom, while Reporters Without Borders monitors national media as a whole. That must cause a difference, although I am still surprised how the US could do worse than Hungary.
