DailyLit: Tess of the D’Urbervilles, book by Thomas Hardy

DailyLit: Tess of the D’Urbervilles, book by Thomas Hardy The first book from Thomas Hardy I’ve ever read, but definitely not the last. At first I found it slow and boring, I would have stopped reading it entirely after the first 30 pages if I were that type, which I am glad I am not, because it just got better and better by every page. And the end is just striking.

I couldn’t find an English edition, but it’s available in French, Spanish and German, these are for sure. And maybe other languages. I’m sorry if English is really not one of them, because it’s a life changing experience, I strongly recommend you to read it.

This Above All – Eric Knight

This Above All – Eric Knight It’s a classic that’s been on my list forever. Interesting that knowing the story I always thought it would be one of those hard to read, depressing war-time stories, but it is nothing of that sort. Of course it’s sad, but still there is this gleam of hope all along that comes through even despair. That is what – in my opinion – makes it lighter compared to other war-time literature. I loved Hemingway’s Farewell to arms or For whom the bell tolls but at certain points when he started philosophizing about war I…

Come Next Summer by Leigh Michaels – Powell’s Books

Come Next Summer by Leigh Michaels – Powell’s Books I wanted something light and easy before I start to read anything else, so I choose one from Leigh Michaels. I used to like her short novels for this sole purpose, this one did not become my favorite though. I love her characters, they are really well written in every novel, but I just felt the story was poor in this one. Or maybe I have just read too much from her already and she seems to be working on the same pattern over and over again. But anyway I picked…

A History of Mistresses by Abbott, Elizabeth

A History of Mistresses by Abbott, Elizabeth I have recently finished “A History of Mistresses”. It is a history of famous mistresses from ancient times until our age examinig every aspect of this phenomena from the ways of becoming a mistress to the public opinion about them. It was actually harder for me to read than I expected. Although it has a good balance between history (in the academic way, based on really thorough research, the author is a historian) and almost tabloid-like portrayal, sometimes I just found it too much, too heavy. But in all it’s a really good…
