Hope everybody had a great weekend! After an incredibly grey and stormy week in Hungary with a taste of Yvette, summer is expected to arrive next week. And I can’t wait. Syria: UN-Arab League envoy Brahimi resigns Amidst an international community “hopelessly divided” over how to end more than three years of bloodshed in Syria, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced that he has regretfully accepted the resignation of Lakhdar Brahimi, the Joint United Nations-League of Arab States Special Representative on the crisis.
Happy Sunday, everybody! I’ve spent the last four days (long weekend in Hungary) relaxing mostly, but I tried to keep up with the news as well. Here’s a few blog posts of last week’s news for you. ‘Many dead’ in Ukraine offensive “Many pro-Russia rebels have been killed, injured and arrested in the Ukrainian government offensive in the eastern city of Sloviansk, acting President Oleksandr Turchynov has said. In a statement, he said the operation in the rebel-held city was not going as quickly as hoped. Rebels have shot down two Ukrainian army helicopters, killing a pilot and a serviceman. Seven have been injured. The UN Security Council is meeting in emergency session at Russia’s request.” In Russia’s request. Now that’s a turn of events.
united-nations: 29 April is Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare. It’s the date in 1997 on which the Chemical Weapons Convention entered into force. This Day provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the victims of chemical warfare, as well as to reaffirm the commitment of Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to the elimination of the threat of chemical weapons, thereby promoting the goals of peace, security, and multilateralism.
united-nations: 25 April is World Malaria Day. Since 2000, the number of child deaths from malaria has been cut in half and the malaria map continues to shrink.
