Sunday Smack

Happy Sunday! Although school has already started on the 1st, it was still very much summer at work this past week. Only at work, though, I am not exactly back to school this time, but started a new online course on edX, plus four other short trainings and challenges, all happening these first two weeks of September. There might be a post about all of them soon. Now, about this week’s reading. How the UN is Shoring Up the Historic Peace Deal in Colombia Colombia gets a lot of support to make this peace a reality. Let’s hope it will…

Sunday Smack

Happy Sunday everybody, lots of world affairs to blab about these days… As things aren’t getting any better around Hungary, the Office of the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights issued statements on its Facebook page both in Hungarian and in English, emphasizing that seeking asylum cannot be viewed as a crime. Unfortunately, as of 15 September, in Hungary, it is. At courts along the southern borders asylum seekers are now being prosecuted for entering Hungary illegally. Hopeful though, there are plenty of Hungarian lawyers who are ready to protest against the new laws, calling themselves Lawyers for the rule…

Justice by Harvard University on edX

Justice by Harvard University on edX The first MOOC course I ever took was one foundation course for legal studies at Harvard. Justice by Professor Michael J. Sandel is basically a political and moral philosophy course. Besides the exciting moral arguments and the adaptation of centuries old moral philosophy cases to current issues, this course really teaches you to argue and defend your opinion. Like why do I think that making it possible to sell one’s kidney on the open market is a bad idea? I know I think it is, but I was having a hard time explaining why…

MOOC away

Happy June, everybody! I have written about my passion for MOOCs and online learning before. Since then I dig deeper into the world of MOOCs, and later I would like to share my experiences here. Not so long ago I read somewhere that someone was describing learning as climbing high peaks or any other extreme sports: we do it, so we know we can do it. I found this description very well-said, as I myself consider learning a hobby at this point of my life. I am learning, because I have to make sure I am still able to! The…

Sunday Smack

Can you believe it’s already November? Well, it’s been a while since the last time when there was no post between two Sunday Smacks. That happened this week. I recently read a blog post where the author wrote she thought it was quite annoying when bloggers complain about neglecting blogging, while she actually was complaining about just that. I will not do that. I was a little busy this week, that’s all. What have you all been reading about this week? Hope you’ll check out these posts too. Mass Graves, Missing Students, and Mexico’s Long Road to Reform This is something…

Sunday Smack

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you are all enjoying a nice spring Sunday! Here in Hungary, we just skipped spring and from winter it turned into summer directly. I am not sure it is fortunate for the things of nature, but we are enjoying the hot weather for now. A few weeks ago, I posted about MOOCs and online learning, now I would like to recommend one of the courses I just signed up to. I wasn’t quite sure whether I can fit this in to my time schedule since there is one month left from the other course I…

Is there a MOOC point?

Confession: I love MOOCs. In fact, I love every kind of opportunity to learn something. And if it is available for free on the internet, anytime one has the time for it, just the better. Isn’t it? I hear the opinions that there is no real innovation behind the idea of MOOCs, since there are many online materials these days by universities available on the internet, you just have to look for them, learn them, same result. And if you want to go to a university, go for real. I am seriously all for lifelong learning and constant self improvement…
