The Interview

I have watched The Interview yesterday and I am now totally sorry for that almost two hours of my life. I do admit I have had one or two laughs along, but that is all, most of the time, I was just waiting for it to be over. Since I know people who actually enjoyed it, I will just add that it is absolutely the kind of move that I never watch. Never. Ever. I don’t enjoy obscenity, neither in graphic nor in oral form in movies at all. Again, tastes are different, if you enjoy these kinds of things,…

Sunday Smack

Happy Sunday everybody! As always, welcome to my new readers and thanks to everybody for following! Besides the sad news that lead the last few days’ headlines, this was an eventful week on all counts. Let’s review a few good reads. On world affairs: What is going on in Ukraine? An analysis on the root cause of what seems to evolve to become the second Orange Revolution. While demonstrations still continue in Kiev, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe is about to create an advisory board to investigate the background of these clashes.  Relief for Central African Republic…

The Door, the movie based on Magda Szabó’s famous novel comes out this week in Hungary directed by Academy Award Winning director István Szabó (no relation, it’s a very common name in Hungary). Recently I was lucky enough to attend a public talk with István Szabó about the movie, the cast, the novel and some background stories. We learned that it wasn’t the director’s idea to make this movie, he was asked to do it. The Door is one of the late Magda Szabó’s most well-known pieces of work translated into 38 languages. It is also one of her autobiographical…

Finally I got to see The Descendants last night. Since it only premiered last week in Hungary I have been waiting to see it for a really long time. Reading and hearing all the stuff about this movie I had all sorts of expectations but it really did surpass all of them. It has such a good balance between good humor and the sadness of the story. George Clooney was really good (despite all the ugly shirts :)), clearly I just love him in everything he does, although I don’t like big words like best acting of his career and…

We watched Iron Lady last night. I loved how they used real documentary images in the movie instead of reacting events. The only thing that was bothering me the whole time was the accuracy and truth of the scenes showing the old Lady Thatcher. But then that’s what always bothers me in movies about people who are still alive. They could tell how much of it is actually true. But in all I liked the movie very much. Although I expected it to focus more on the years she spent in office and less on her failing health, I didn’t get…

I just saw One Day. I am sort of hit by this story, this is really something you keep thinking about for a long time after you’re done watching. Still I wanna read the book too, I heard that it’s even better. I wonder why this movie didn’t get any awards though. Or nominations at least. Does anybody know why? Or am I wrong? Anne Hathaway with the British accent was absolutely fantastic. And the guy was very good too. Watch it if you haven’t already. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/)

Finally got around to watch “The Whistleblower” and all I can say is WOW! The story is unbelievable (even so that it’s based upon actual events). Rachel Weisz is fantastic. There are a few ugly scenes but it is absolutely worth watching! cshinndig: “The Whistleblower” is based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraska cop who served as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and outed the U.N. for covering up a sex trafficking scandal. I was able to see the movie tonight and got to listen to Bolkovac answer questions after. Powerful stuff. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/)
