united-nations: Worldwide, only Bolivia and Rwanda have as many women as men in their parliament. The 2017 “Women in Politics” map, created by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UN Women, depicts global rankings for women in the executive and parliamentary branches of government as of 1 January 2017. The map shows slow progress towards gender equality in these areas at regional and national levels. Download the map to see how women in your country are represented: http://unwo.men/gF3d30br9gl

Sunday Smack

How is everybody doing this Sunday? I had a really awful week, the kind when you just wish it was over already. The weekend helped a little, I have to add, but tomorrow is work again… In the meantime, the heatwave that has affected all Europe this week has just reached Hungary with its record high maximums expected for the middle of next week. For the time being, I am still enjoying the hot weather, but you might ask me about it on Wednesday again. Now, let’s see some interesting posts from this week. Assembly: States ‘ignore’ nearly 11,000 European…

Sunday Smack

Happy Spring Everybody! I hope you are all having a great weekend and can take a little time to check out this week’s posts. On Bibi’s ‘Reversal’ Concerning Palestinian Statehood and Netanyahu’s Latest ‘Reversal’ on Palestinian Statehood I had to include both posts, like a sequel. The newly re-elected Israeli prime minister has reversed his position on the two-state solution two times within a few days. At least, by the looks of it. Will Syrian War Criminals Ever Face Justice? One should only hope so. The Syrian nightmare entered its fifth year and nothing seems to change. A Country Was Nearly Wiped…

March 8 – International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day Everybody! I have to admit I don’t like the way this day is celebrated where I come from, in Hungary. Here “Women’s Day” preserved its old socialist holiday feature when men present women with flowers or chocolate. Now, it’s not that I don’t like flowers and chocolate, but I would much rather be treated equally and fairly every single day of the year than being celebrated on this one for something I am not even responsible for achieving (being a woman, that is). Via The Economist You can see Hungary is not even close to the…

End Violence Against Women

united-nations: Photo: SayNO – UNiTE to End Violence Against Women “While we may never know quite the full extent of the problem, what we do know is how to stop it — because at the heart of preventing violence against women is fundamentally challenging the culture of discrimination that allows it to continue”. In his latest LinkedIn Influencer post, Ban Ki-moon says that we all have a role to play – and will all benefit from –ending the global pandemic of violence against women and girls.  Read his piece on LinkedIn Pulse: http://j.mp/1r2wzhB #orangeurhood #16Days  November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence…

mohandasgandhi: dank-potion: 23andchildfree: Happy women’s day, yo Women perform 66% of the world’s work, but receive only 11% of the world’s income, and own only 1% of the world’s land. Women make up 66% of the world’s illiterate adults. Women head 83% of single-parent families. The number of families nurtured by women alone doubled from 1970 to 1995 (from 5.6 million to 12.2 million). Women account for 55% of all college students, but even when women have equal years of education it does not translate into economic opportunities or political power. There are six million more women than men in…
