Five disturbing facts not to be celebrated on International Women’s Day

March 8 is the international day commemorating women’s cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements. At least that’s the definition in the books. I was always annoyed by the way International Women’s Day was celebrated where I live. First of all, it feels like some tradition left behind from the socialist era that I could happily live without, and second, I don’t like to be celebrated for things I didn’t achieve myself. (I did not work to be a woman, I was born this way. Same with “namedays”, what are those for?) I don’t have anything against getting flowers, but I don’t…

Happy Sunday and Happy Summer! This week Britain managed to pull off yet another election where practically everybody lost an no-one knows what to come after, this seems to have become the new standard over there.  Also, political turmoil is mounting in the US, but the President still doesn’t seem to be worried. On this week’s episode of The West Wing Weekly (S03E09 Bartlet for America) there were a lot of talk about Congressional hearings and what they are all about. I happened to listen to it the morning after #ComeyDay, and again, I just love when entertainment really adds…

For the time being, I am still enjoying the hot weather, but you might ask me about it on Wednesday again. Now, let’s see some interesting posts from this week. Assembly: States ‘ignore’ nearly 11,000 European…

March 8 – International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day Everybody! I have to admit I don’t like the way this day is celebrated where I come from, in Hungary. Here “Women’s Day” preserved its old socialist holiday feature when men present women with flowers or chocolate. Now, it’s not that I don’t like flowers and chocolate, but I would much rather be treated equally and fairly every single day of the year than being celebrated on this one for something I am not even responsible for achieving (being a woman, that is). Via The Economist You can see Hungary is not even close to the…
