I hope you are having a smooth, relaxing weekend! We keep saying that these things can happen now anywhere, anytime, but if there was ever a place where I couldn’t imagine such a terrible event happening, it would have been Las Vegas. There are times when I am glad to be living in a country where people can’t just walk around with guns. I know that doesn’t mean I am safe, just saying. How many more people will have to die for pro-gun Americans to realize that something needs to be done? Anyway, keep safe, everybody, wherever you are! Although,…

Happy Sunday and Happy Summer! This week Britain managed to pull off yet another election where practically everybody lost an no-one knows what to come after, this seems to have become the new standard over there.  Also, political turmoil is mounting in the US, but the President still doesn’t seem to be worried. On this week’s episode of The West Wing Weekly (S03E09 Bartlet for America) there were a lot of talk about Congressional hearings and what they are all about. I happened to listen to it the morning after #ComeyDay, and again, I just love when entertainment really adds…

Happy Easter, Everybody! I hope you are having a peaceful and relaxing holiday weekend, whether you celebrate Easter or not. As you might have heard, President János Áder signed the legislation making Central European University’s operations in Hungary impossible into law this week. Demonstrations in Hungary keep going on, now the aim is to get MPs to refer the law to revision to the Constitutional Court (and the whole regime to leave, while we’re at it). The demonstrators are mostly university students, protesting peacefully against this irrational, outrageous and outright stupid act of the government. Meanwhile, on Easter Monday, there will…

Happy Sunday! I hope you all had a great week trying to figure out your stance on all issues affecting your lives these days. I was determined not to post about the President-Elect anymore until some new story comes up, but I didn’t have much choice, most of the blogs I follow were full of predictions (but mostly yet unanswered questions) of what’s to come in world affairs. On a more delightful note, it is Gilmore Girls week! Which coincides with Thanksgiving weekend in the US, and Black Friday all over the world. So I hope you’ll have a happy…

Happy Sunday and happy Halloween, everybody!  We are having a long weekend in Hungary, unfortunately filled with work for me. I can’t believe how quickly we are approaching the end of 2016. There are a lot of exciting things this coming November holds for us though, like the Marrakesh Climate Change Conference (to be preceded by the entry into force of the Paris Agreement), an historic presidential election in the US, the return of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, to list just a few. Here’s your reading for today. This will not be the end of “The Jungle” One of the…

Happy Sunday, everybody! I hope you all had a wonderful week. Mine was especially great and exciting. Check out my Instagram for a clue. 🙂 Let’s see what I have been reading, mostly during my travels this week… Putin’s Announcement on Russia: Unexpected but not Surprising The Russian announcement about them leaving the Syrian war scene met as much astonishment as the one about them entering it. The important question though is what will happen in Geneva now? First Report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy to the Human Rights Council I posted several times last…

Happy Sunday, people! This was a very busy week in terms of world affairs, and it is not even over yet. I know, once again, the blog doesn’t really reflect this, and I am sorry about it, I have been kept really busy at work these days, I am continuously behind with my reading goals. I’ll try to work on this, I promise. Here’s three short ones, well in fact, two short ones and a longer one for you to get informed. 7 Humanity Affirming Charts from the UN’s Final MDG Progress Report These results are really hopeful signs of…

I hope your weekends are going well. Mine is going too fast, as usual. Here’s some reading for you all… Protecting Europe or Irregular Migrants? The (Mis)use of Force in the Mediterranean It is clear that there is no win-win solution here. But even finding the one that causes the least harm will be difficult. Coup Attempt in Burundi–What’s Next? Another African nation that faces political violence and conflict ahead of an upcoming election. Hersh’s Account of the Bin Laden Raid is Journalistic Malpractice Agreed. And the quote about how fact checking is just nuisance is simply outrageous. It is…

Hey Everybody! Hope all your weekends are going fine and you can take a few minutes to check out this week’s posts. With Maliki Gone, Can Iraq’s New Prime Minister Put His Country Back Together? That we’re going to have to wait and see. What You Need to Know about the UN Human Rights Council’s Gaza Investigation Sadly, it is probably true that the investigation will be no use in improving the situation. I have to insert one of my favorite quotes from Henry Kissinger’s Diplomacy here. He writes that fact-finding missions are “the standard device for diplomats signaling that…

Happy pre-Christmas weekend everybody! Especially those who don’t have to work anymore before Christmas. I am not amongst them this year, but I too will be heading home for the holiday tomorrow night. World news is all about South Sudan and CAR these days. It seems these two topics are going to define headlines for the last days of the year too. Here are some great posts from last week. On world affairs: South Sudan: How Bad Can It Get? Worrisome turning of events in the youngest country of the world. There is no way to predict the outcome yet. Read…
