UN rights chief urges protection for individuals revealing human rights violations

UN rights chief urges protection for individuals revealing human rights violations “Snowden’s case has shown the need to protect persons disclosing information on matters that have implications for human rights, as well as the importance of ensuring respect for the right to privacy,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay. Well, I do agree that whistleblowers who reveal serious human rights violations should be protected somehow, I am just not sure this case is the right one to bring this up. I am sorry, I am still not convinced that what he was/is doing is 100% for the…

Another really bad week for me is coming to an end. I don’t want to go into details, because Hungarian law graduates’ career turmoils most definitely don’t constitute an international affair, especially since whenever I have such negative experience, usually a fully Hungarian company is involved. I really never gave any credit to such generalization that blames one’s mistake on all others, but now my own experiences suggest that when I hear trash about Hungarian employers, it’s not entirely baseless. If you also have some really hair-raising story about pursuing your legal career and being played anywhere in the world,…

I submitted this photo this week for http://ifuwerentafraid.tumblr.com/. Sheryl Sandberg’s LeanIn.org is asking you what would you do if you weren’t afraid? And this answer pretty much sums up my life right now. Based on the notes it got, I am not alone feeling this way. What would your answer be? Go to http://ifuwerentafraid.tumblr.com/ and submit your photo. On other news, we are after a huge heat-wave in Hungary with all-time-high temperature records breaking almost every day. I still claim I like this weather, although I admit it is less pleasant when you have work to do and errands to run. Or a…

Busy, busy, busy week… While this was a very eventful week in terms of world affairs, in my corner of the world the historic floods along the river Danube take over all the news these days. Fortunately in Hungary it is not as bad as in some parts of Germany and the Czech Republic, but most of all it is due to the hard work of both professional people and volunteers who come to work day and night not just from the affected areas but all over the country. I wish all the strenght and persevarence to all those along…

A busy week behind us again, unfortunately with more bad news than good. Even the weather took a worrying turn in many parts of the world. Starting with the hurricane in Oklahoma to all the extreme weather issues across Western Europe these days. Can we blame it on climate change or not? Of course I’ll leave this discussion to those who are experts of the topic while I’ll remain on more familiar grounds. On world affairs: Will We Witness the End of Peacekeeping in the Golan Heights? Recent exchanges of fire between Syria and Israel question the future of a not properly armed…

Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we…

Thorbjørn Jagland: Killer Safarov is not a hero | HUMANERIGHTSEUROPE

Thorbjørn Jagland: Killer Safarov is not a hero | HUMANERIGHTSEUROPE Glorifying a convicted murderer and transforming him into a hero is unacceptable, Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland has declared. Condemning the glorification of killer Ramil Safarov, the Secretary General said: “Safarov was convicted for murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in Hungary. On August 31, he was transferred to Azerbaijan, and immediately pardoned. I find it unacceptable that a convicted murderer is welcomed as a hero. “I reject the prospect of a world whose moral code begins to fray, where respect for human dignity is denied. This is…
