The Sustainable Development Summit is underway in New York City. The summit kicked off yesterday with an historic opening address by Pope Francis, a call to action from Malala Yousafzai and performances by Shakira and Angelique Kidjo among other events. UN highlights power of social media in modern diplomacy during day-long New York event The United Nations has held its first ever Social Media Day at its New York Headquarters on Friday, in an event featuring social media professionals, digital diplomacy practitioners and academics who were sharing their experiences, discussing trends and proving insights into their work. The United Nations is present on almost all social media platforms (including Tumblr), and indeed considers social media so important as to dedicate a whole day of events to it.

As President Obama pointed out in his speech, world leaders gathered in New York, because “others realized that we gain more from cooperation than conquest”.
