Another really bad week for me is coming to an end. I don’t want to go into details, because Hungarian law graduates’ career turmoils most definitely don’t constitute an international affair, especially since whenever I have such negative experience, usually a fully Hungarian company is involved. I really never gave any credit to such generalization that blames one’s mistake on all others, but now my own experiences suggest that when I hear trash about Hungarian employers, it’s not entirely baseless. If you also have some really hair-raising story about pursuing your legal career and being played anywhere in the world,…

Happy Sunday Everyone! This is the last day of my favorite month of the year, although this year it did not turn out quite well for me, careerwise, especially. I am hopeful that the next month will bring on better things, though. Here’s a brief collection of what I thought was important to read this week. On world affairs: Why Angelina Jolie Means So Much to the United Nations This week Angelina Jolie addressed the UN Security Council’s special session on sexual violence in armed conflicts. This is a good one about what her star power means to the organization….

Yay, blabbingworldaffairs turned 2 today! I just got this nice note from Tumblr and found out my blog turned 2 today! 🙂 Well, two years ago, it started in a very different form than what it is today, but still… First, I started this blog only because there were a bunch of Tumblr blogs I liked and I just wanted to be able to follow them. Initially, I just reblogged posts I liked, but after a few months, I decided to develeop it to something more than that. It is still only getting closer to what I imagine it to be,…

Believe it or not, China likely allowed Snowden’s exit as a favor to the U.S.

Believe it or not, China likely allowed Snowden’s exit as a favor to the U.S. “Typically, when the United States and China argue about transferring a high-profile and politically sensitive individual between their custodies, it’s a Chinese dissident whom the U.S. wants to grant asylum. Those cases are often perceived as deeply embarrassing for China, although Beijing has increasingly learned to live with them. Perhaps Chinese authorities saw this as a rare reversal: an American political dissident looking for asylum in Hong Kong, which despite its special status is a part of China. In the Chinese government worldview, granting asylum…

I submitted this photo this week for http://ifuwerentafraid.tumblr.com/. Sheryl Sandberg’s LeanIn.org is asking you what would you do if you weren’t afraid? And this answer pretty much sums up my life right now. Based on the notes it got, I am not alone feeling this way. What would your answer be? Go to http://ifuwerentafraid.tumblr.com/ and submit your photo. On other news, we are after a huge heat-wave in Hungary with all-time-high temperature records breaking almost every day. I still claim I like this weather, although I admit it is less pleasant when you have work to do and errands to run. Or a…

G8 Summit 2013 – Decisions made

The annual G8 summit has wrapped up earlier this week. On Monday I posted about its expected agenda, now I’d like to briefly go through what’s been decided in Lough Erne in those two days. The EU and US came to an agreement to launch negotiations about what could be “the biggest bilateral trade deal in history” both in worth and in significance. After their main economic discussion, the G8 leaders highlighted the fight against unemployment as a priority in fostering global recovery. They agreed that after bright prospects in 2012, economic and financial difficulties remain in 2013 that require…

G8 – Current Issues

The annual G8 summit starts today at the Lough Erne Resort, in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Here’s a brief summary of this year’s agenda. The infographics below are courtesy of the G8 UK Presidency, you can visit their Flickr account clicking the pictures. The free trade agreement between the EU and the US is on the EU’s table for some time now, and the UK Presidency also declared trade advancement one of the most pressing issues. What makes this discussion interesting is the UK’s possible estarngement from the EU. President Obama already said that in the case of the UK leaving…

G8 – Lobbies and Protests

Critics of the group come not just from political and diplomatic circles. From the end of the 1990s anti-globalization demonstrations has become the regular accompaniment of the summit. Besides asserting their opinions it occured that protesters attempted to stand in the way of attendees of the summit, or took other measures in trying to disorient the event. Most memorably during the 2001 Genoa summit, the protests turned violent and resulted in the death of a demonstrator and the injury of about 70 more. For this reason mainly, ever since 2001 there is an explicit intention to hold the meetings in…

Summer is here!!! Have I mentioned already how summer is my favorite time of the year? I love the kind of heat waves that seem to make everyone else around me suffer. I’m sorry, I just do. And now, one of those heat waves is approaching Hungary, so this is my time! I know, I am always told I should move to some distant part of the world where tempretures and moisture are constantly through the roof. My hair would be a mess all the time, but I would be happy! 🙂 Do you have any suggestions where I should…
