eretzyisrael: Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. January 27 marks the 69th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.  In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly designated this day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD), an annual day of commemoration to honor the victims of the Nazi era. From 1940 to 1945, more than 1.1 million men, women and children were killed in the Auschwitz concentration camp. 90% of them were Jews. All were innocent. Today, we remember Never Again.

In Single Secret Ballot, General Assembly Elects 14 Member States to Three-Year Terms on Human Rights Council The General Assembly yesterday elected 14 States to serve on the Human Rights Council, the United Nations body responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. Those elected were Algeria, China, Cuba, France, Maldives, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, United Kingdom and Viet Nam.  All would serve three-year terms beginning on 1 January 2014. A very busy and exciting week is about to approach. The next session of the UN General Assembly kicks off next Tuesday and then there’s a bunch of other major world events scheduled around it.
