Busy, busy, busy week… While this was a very eventful week in terms of world affairs, in my corner of the world the historic floods along the river Danube take over all the news these days. Fortunately in Hungary it is not as bad as in some parts of Germany and the Czech Republic, but most of all it is due to the hard work of both professional people and volunteers who come to work day and night not just from the affected areas but all over the country. ‘Outraged’ by rising death toll in Syria, General Assembly demands halt to all violence Yet another (the fifth) non-binding resolution from the UN General Assembly on Syria, still none from the Security Council. Adopted by a vote of 107 in favour to 12 against, with 59 abstentions, the Assembly text expressed the body’s outrage at the “rapidly increasing death toll” in Syria, which the UN estimates to be in the tens of thousands. United Nations News Centre – Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, Republic of Korea and Rwanda obtain non-permanent seats on UN Security Council The United Nations General Assembly has elected Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, the Republic of Korea and Rwanda to serve as non-permanent members on the Security Council for two-year terms beginning on 1 January 2013. The five permanent Council members, which each wield the power of veto, are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Non-permanent members Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo will remain on the 15-member Council until the end of 2013.
While of course the most anticipated speeches of the general debate are yet to come, it has started yesterday nonetheless. The report of the Secretary General brought no surprise, he was emphasizing the same issues he was talking about before. I liked how straightforward and articulate he was about the most important ones. Regarding Syria he warned once again that the serious and growing threat to international peace and security requires Security Council action. Security Council fails to adopt Syria resolution Despite the appeals for united and concerted action to help end the escalating violence in Syria, the Security Council today failed to adopt a resolution that would have threatened sanctions on Damascus, owing to the negative votes of some of the body’s permanent members. Eleven of the Council’s 15 members voted in favour of the resolution’s text, Russia and China – both permanent members – voted against, while two others, Pakistan and South Africa, abstained. A veto by any one of the Council’s five permanent members means a resolution cannot be adopted.
