So, as the busiest week in international diplomacy is over now, here is what I thought of the general debate this year. The 72nd session of the UN General Assembly is well underway and of course keeps going on until next fall. Its most prominent week though with high level officials representing their countries on the GA floor is over now, with the closing of the general debate on Monday. The general debate must seem boring for many. I don’t think there is any one person who sits down and listens to almost 200 speeches in a row for days….
Happy Sunday, all! I am still not done with the UNGA coverage, there is one more post in the making, to review the major happenings of this past week. The UN Social Media team did a tremendous job throughout the week, be sure check out their space. Envío buenos pensamientos a mis seguidores en México y Puerto Rico. And to everybody else, once again, if you can, please consider donating to help those affected – here you can find a couple of ways to do that. Let’s get to this week’s stories now. So, Has This Ever Happened Before? Let’s…
united-nations: People around the world are celebrating the International Day of Peace on Thursday, showing their support for a world of peace, prosperity and protection for all. “Today and everyday let us not focus on what separates us but what binds us as a human family,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. 📷: Annual ringing of the ceremonial Peace Bell, a gift from Japan, at UN Headquarters in New York (UN Photo) More on the Day here: http://bit.ly/1iqQKCa.
The general debate of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly starts on Tuesday, but there were plenty of meetings and events on Monday already. Just a couple of highlights from Monday: A High-Level Event on UN Reform was held as one of the first meetings of the day chaired by none other than US President Donald Trump who participates in his first UNGA as POTUS this week. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres delivered remarks before the High Level Stakeholder Dialogue on Climate Change which is of course now a recurring topic of the UNGA. The Dialogue was attended by…

Happy Sunday! I hope this finds you safe and well. Here’s a bunch of ways to help hurricane victims and here are others to help Mexico after the earthquake. I hope you’ll consider to contribute if you can! Most of my sources had a short week, so there were less posts, but lots happened! Here’s what I recommend. This hurricane season shows why small islands pushed so hard for climate action And also why measurable action cannot be delayed any more. What would war with North Korea look like? Not good, not at all good. It wouldn’t be simple and…
Happy weekend, everybody and happy long weekend to all to whom that applies! I hope your weekend is happy and relaxed! This week’s round-up is short, but there are some important topics here to check out. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is Just Doing His Job It’s a wonder how President Trump havent’t tweeted lies about the High Commissioner yet, that’s what he seems to do with everybody who dares to criticize him. Rules for Reconstruction in Syria I don’t know whether or not it is timely to speak about reconstruction in Syria yet, but this is a…
Happy September, everybody! As always, when September comes, I am half sad for my favorite season to be over, and half excited for all the programmes and events that come with fall. I thought I’d provide you with a round-up of what to expect this September in terms of world affairs. The post might be updated later as new events come to my knowledge and you are also welcome to suggest new additions! First off, there are two important international observances, 5 September is the International Day of Charity and 8 September is International Literacy Day. September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. On…
Happy Sunday, everybody! I hope your week was better, than mine! I had this quite serious cold sticking through most of it making it quite hard for me to function normally. Which I still needed to do. This weekend I am attending a two day learning training which I am excited about, even though I am still not well enough, and despite this means I will not have any weekend or time to rest at all. Oh well, maybe next week… What I am really sad about, though, is the end of summer, which I feel has just passed me…
Happy weekend, everybody! I hope this finds you well. I had a nice mini vacation at the countryside this week, where I spent most of my time out in the sun reading a book or just listening to the sounds of nature. Unfortunately it resulted in a terrible cold/allergy, but the good part was worth it! This time I feel like I have written all I could about such pointless, terrible attacks and find it hard to add anything meaningful at this point. I am sad it just keeps happening… ¡Enviando buenos pensamientos y abrazos cálidos a todos los afectados! ¡Mantente…
