Sunday Smack

Happy Sunday, everybody! This is the first post ever that I am writing on a train, can you tell? Actually, I am pre-writing it on Saturday, and when you are reading it on Sunday, I am on a boat – a Danube cruise trip (still on my mission to catch-up on this rapidly passing summer). Hope your are all having a great time too! Take a look at what happened this past week, through the lense of my favorite bloggers. Russia’s convoy to East Ukraine and the International Committee of the Red Cross This convoy which turned out not to…

A Test for the European Union

A Test for the European Union In a speech on Saturday, Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary said his country was done with liberal democracy. Mr. Orban cited Russia, Turkey and China as “successful” examples of the kind of “illiberal new state based on national foundations” that he wants Hungary to be.

The new European Parliament

I love infographics, don’t you? This one’s from epthinktank.eu, showing  the political groups in the new EP.

Happy weekend everybody! There could not possibly be anyone who needed this weekend more than me. I have worked 10-12 hours/day all week, substituting for two of my colleagues away on vacation. It left me really worn out and anxiously looking forward to my own vacation two weeks from now. Catching up on world news was kind of a relaxation after all that. How about you all? How is your summer going so far? A Call for Article 51 Letters There are rules in the UN Charter for the instances of using force. And then there is reality. Perhaps this…

Happy first day of June, dear readers! 🙂 When you are reading this, I am having a great time in London. I hope you are also having a wonderful weekend, wherever you are in the world. 🙂 Since this post was pre-scheduled on Thursday before I left, I only had time to read half of the usual stuff. So this is it for now, I’ll be back with a proper Sunday Smack next week. Thank you all for reading, have a great summer! 🙂  A Far-Right Resurgence in Europe. What Does It Mean? A great overview of European election results….

Happy weekend everybody! And happy long weekend for those in the US and UK! I hope everyone in the EU has voted already, you know how I feel about voting. 🙂 It’s going to be a busy week for me, with loads of things to get done before I am heading to London the next weekend. I am very excited already! 🙂 Interestingly, I have only picked international law stories for this Sunday. Hope you’ll find them as interesting as I did. Crimea after Cyprus v. Turkey: Just Satisfaction for Unlawful Annexation? I have mentioned the European Court of Human…

Hope everybody had a great weekend! After an incredibly grey and stormy week in Hungary with a taste of Yvette, summer is expected to arrive next week. And I can’t wait. Here’s a few posts of what I read last week. Syrian Peace Envoy Finally Admits Defeat I tend to agree with SG Ban that it is not Brahimi’s failure. I’d like to think that the problem is not unsolvable after all, even though two high profile diplomats have given up trying already. Then again, I don’t blame neither of them. Happy Sunday, everybody! After the last long weekend, this one was a one day weekend in Hungary, and I can’t believe tomorrow’s Monday already, I would have needed so much more sleep. And staying up for ESC last night did not help. About that: I am really saddened by all the hate that’s pouring my social media streams from Hungary. Normally I like to think that we are way over this stone aged thinking, just to realize time and again that we are so not. For me, the song itself wasn’t my favorite at all, so I did not think…

As news were mostly about Ukraine this week, these are some of the blog posts I liked most. After the storm: next steps for the EU and Ukraine What can the EU do to help the people of Ukraine who chose Europe so that they won’t end up disappointed again? Is (Or Was) Ukraine in a Non-International Armed Conflict? Hopefully it will remain past tense now, but the question is still legit. Especially considering the way neighboring countries were preparing to deal with the situation, this labeling could have mattered a lot. Robert Mugabe Turns 90 On this occasion here’s…
