Happy first day of Summer everybody! Astrologically, that is, although weather-wise we are past a few hot summer days already. I hope all your summers are going wonderfully. I am still busy as ever, and it’s a shame especially because there are plenty of things to post about these days. I am trying hard not to miss marking anything important. These are just a few of this week’s top posts. World Refugee Day 2015: The Urgent Need For A Fresh Perspective On Global Migration Yesterday was World Refugee Day, but these days there are so much more to remind us…

June 20 is World Refugee Day

June 20 is World Refugee Day “The UN General Assembly, on 4 December 2000, adopted resolution 55/76 where it noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, and that the Organization of African Unity (OAU) had agreed to have International Refugee Day coincide with Africa Refugee Day on 20 June. The General Assembly therefore decided that 20 June would be celebrated as World Refugee Day.” The status and future of refugees is a pressing issue these days, as currently there are almost 60 million refugees in the world.

Introduction to International Criminal Law by Case Western Reserve University on Coursera

Introduction to International Criminal Law by Case Western Reserve University on Coursera Introduction to International Criminal Law was the second MOOC I have taken. At the time, since it was my first course on Coursera, I was really impressed by the technical side. On Coursera, video lectures are continuously interrupted by review quiestions, checking on how well you understand the material. It really engages you to focus and not loose attention while watching. During the course we have learned about the basic terminology of international criminal law through recent cases. There were excerpts from recent trials on international tribunals in…

And then there is summer too, with all kinds of summer things to do! But I’ll really try to do my best to post more. Now, here’s your not-to-be-missed Sunday reading: The Legal and Political Feasibility of the EU’s Planned ‘War on Smuggling’ in Libya Alright then, stop the boats, but will it help those refugees willing to risk their lives to come to Europe? No, it…

Justice by Harvard University on edX

Justice by Harvard University on edX The first MOOC course I ever took was one foundation course for legal studies at Harvard. Justice by Professor Michael J. Sandel is basically a political and moral philosophy course. Besides the exciting moral arguments and the adaptation of centuries old moral philosophy cases to current issues, this course really teaches you to argue and defend your opinion. Like why do I think that making it possible to sell one’s kidney on the open market is a bad idea? I know I think it is, but I was having a hard time explaining why…

MOOC away

Happy June, everybody! I have written about my passion for MOOCs and online learning before. Since then I dig deeper into the world of MOOCs, and later I would like to share my experiences here. Not so long ago I read somewhere that someone was describing learning as climbing high peaks or any other extreme sports: we do it, so we know we can do it. I found this description very well-said, as I myself consider learning a hobby at this point of my life. I am learning, because I have to make sure I am still able to! The…
