Sunday Smack

Happy Sunday! This is one of the few occasions when I don’t even know what to add to all that’s going on. I am quite a bit overwhelmed these days not just with what’s going on in the world, but in my personal life mostly. So, I will just provide you with some weekend reading. A Major Global Report About Nutrition Around World Shows That We Are All Eating the Wrong Things Indeed, we are. And we need to find out what to do about it, especially on parts of the world where it is not about personal choices and…

Happy Sunday! October ended just as sad as it started. I just realized that the Las Vegas shooting and the latest attack in New York happened on the first and the last days of last month. I wish there would be no more. Aside from the tragic events, I hope you had a great Halloween week. I cannot believe it’s almost Christmas time, I am hardly over summer’s ending, I am definitely not ready for the holidays yet! Here’s some reading for you now. Myanmar’s Rohingya Crisis and the Need for a Regional Response to Statelessness in Southeast Asia A…

Hello, November!

Happy November, everybody! I can’t believe there is only eight weeks left of this year, it’s insane. Let’s see what to look forward to this month. Again, I included a couple just for fun. First of all, the Obama Foundation Summit kicked off actually on the last day of October, but goes on through November 1 too. You can follow the conversations clicking the link. President Obama is such an inspirational leader, and it is so soothing to see him still working to change the world. I still believe he can. 2 November is  the International Day to End Impunity for…

Happy Sunday! I kept watching these Spanish news channels for language learning purposes even before things got interesting. The one thing I can thank the Catalan government now is for contributing to my education like that. But jokes aside, I keep wondering about the right to self-determination in this context, as to what about the rights of those Catalans who do not wish to switch nationalities and most probably loose their EU citizenship? Secession is indeed a very delicate issue with a bunch of questions which even the most seasoned constitutionalists only guessing the answers to. Check out this week’s…

Blabbing inspiration: don’t judge people by a single story

Or rather, don’t judge people at all. But how often does it happen that you form opinions about people based on their skin color, their nationality, their jobs, their marital status, their educational background, etc.? Watch this TED talk for a serious life lesson. In this video Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talks about the inaccuracy of judging whole groups by one single story. The foundation is of course her own life story, being the daughter of middle-class Nigerian university professors, which in itself contradicts stereotypes about people in Africa. I think the main message is an important lesson for any occasion…

Happy Sunday! We are having a long weekend in Hungary due to a national holiday tomorrow, which I am trying to spend resting and catching up with family and friends at home. I hope you are having a great weekend too! Former US presidents appeared yesterday for a hurricane relief concert in Texas. Does this unique club of men ever make you feel nostalgic? Even the ones you never agreed with politically, at least they were competent. Just saying. Anyway, referring back to my #MeToo post, I have given quite a few thoughts to the issue these days, as it…

Me too

I have been reading numerous articles and posts these recent days. What made me decide to chime in is all the misunderstanding I see about the issue, and all the ignorant people who still don’t take the whole thing seriously.  What I hope this huge amount of opinions and stories will achieve is to educate all affected (and those not affected) about what is appropriate and what is not. So, according to certain statistics, 8 out of 10 women have experienced sexual harrassment at least once in her life. Other times, the figures are lower, around 50%, indicating that the…

Happy Sunday, everybody! We have the nicest fall weather in Hungary these days, I hope you are doing good too. There are a lot of disturbing things going on in the world right now, from natural disasters through political nonsense to harrassment of women. Even if you are fortunate enough to be safe from it all, please take a moment to think about how you could help. Because we all can help, I believe and I will keep repeating this. Here’s a couple more disturbing but important stories for you… Populist International Law? The Suspended Independence and the Normative Value…

Sunday Smack

I hope you are having a smooth, relaxing weekend! We keep saying that these things can happen now anywhere, anytime, but if there was ever a place where I couldn’t imagine such a terrible event happening, it would have been Las Vegas. There are times when I am glad to be living in a country where people can’t just walk around with guns. I know that doesn’t mean I am safe, just saying. How many more people will have to die for pro-gun Americans to realize that something needs to be done? Anyway, keep safe, everybody, wherever you are! Although,…
