Who else is tired of all those early year-in-reviews? I mean it could very well be that the best of this year is yet to come! It must come in a hurry, no doubt, but still, there is a chance. Why not wait for it? That being said, check out the Top 25 News Photos of 2016 collected by The Atlantic these photos are everything! And check out the other stories from this week too! Aleppo Will Be Synonymous with Srebrenica The situation is grave enough already without such news emerging from Aleppo.  John Kerry’s Final Job is Not to Whitewash…

Happy Sunday! Antonio Guterres was officially appointed by the General Assembly as the 9th Secretary General of the UN this week. I honestly think he is well suited for the role and great things can be expected in his tenure. On a completely different note, Bob Dylan got a Nobel Prize in Literature and although I am only slightly aquainted with his work, I am not at all one of those literature snobs who can’t understand this one. I have always considered song lyrics in the league of poetry (well, the better ones anyway), so congrats is definitely in order…

Happy Sunday, everybody! This is the last Sunday Smack of this August and this summer, actually. In terms of the calendar, at least, I hope the weather stays warm for a while. I have spent this last weekend (made it a long weekend, actually) at home in Nagykálló with some well needed rest. September is going to be all work, no stops for me. As always, at this time of the year, I am half sad – for my favorite season to end, half excited – for things to get twirling again. And twirling, they are, this year. I have…

Happy Sunday Everybody! I hope you are all savouring your last weeks of summer this time around (unless you live somewhere where it is summer all year round in which case I envy you, or somewhere where it is not summer these months in which case let me know when it is summer already, then I want to go there). This week it was really down-season around the office for me, but at least coming back from vacation did not hurt that much. August 20 is also a National Day in Hungary, so when I am writing this (scheduled post…

Happy Sunday and happy summer everybody! After half a week of vacation at lake Balaton, a wonderful Plácido Domingo concert in Budapest, half a week of staycation in Nagykálló including some old school meteor shower watching, I will be back to work tomorrow. Let’s see what else happened this week. Russia’s Lawful Land Grab This comes on the week when Ukraine claims Russia is arranging military moves on their borders again. Can a New Peacekeeping Force Stabilize South Sudan? UN peacekeeping has a bad reputation these days. In theory I do think it can do wonders, but in practice it…

Happy Sunday, everybody! As of today, I am off to vacation, so this is a pre-scheduled post. I had an unexpectedly busy week with lots of work to do and so little time remaining for other important things. Among the latter: taking the final exam of the International Law in Action: A Guide to the International Courts and Tribunals in The Hague course I participated in recently on Coursera. I managed to finish the course Saturday night. Midnight, to be exact, after a tiresome day of touristing around (with a real tourist) in Budapest, and, uhm, also a glass of wine….

Hello, everyone! Another week with unspeakable tragedies in the world, I hope everyone is doing fine! In the coming weeks I am experimenting with some new ideas around here on the blog, which will slightly shake up these Sunday round-ups too. I hope you like a little variety. So this week, I seem to have finalized the schedule of my vacation week. Two weeks to go, it is going to be short, but I will make sure it’s going to be great. Speaking of greatness, have you watched the First Lady’s episode of Carpool Karaoke on the Late Late Show…

Happy Sunday! Again, I hope everybody is safe this weekend! After a very eventful and exciting few days in international law, let’s recap some of the biggest stories of the week. Failed coup: 250 dead, 1400 injured, 2,839 detained I did not come across a proper blog post about this so far, but still had to include it. What is happening in the world? Turkey used to be a peaceful holiday location not so long ago. China’s Legacy Maritime Claims If you are an international lawyer, or follow international law news sites and blogs you couldn’t have not heard about…

Happy Sunday, everybody! After getting over the first big shock of the news of the week, let’s take a look at how bloggers blogged about it… “Brexit” Hangover: The Morning After a “Leave” Vote Explained This one’s been written before we knew the results, taking the possible consequences into account, thus minus  the shock and disbelief included in others. Big Implications at the UN for Brexit This is one more item to add to a list of uncertainties. I think contemplating the UK leaving the UN too is completely unnecessary though, since the whole point of this referendum wasn’t anything…

Happy Sunday and greetings from rainy London! At least they predict it to be rainy during this weekend, but at the time I am writing this (scheduled post alert) I am still hoping they are wrong! Anyway, we are going to attend, uhm… we have attended The Queen’s Birthday Parade on Saturday, and then spend a pleasant weekend strolling around in my favorite city ever. Come rain or come shine. So here’s what I’ve been reading while preparing for the trip… To Really Improve the Lives of Syrian Refugees, Turkey and the World Must Cooperate Better Turkey will unchangeably  remain…
